Personal Reflections
Nothing Is Impossible with God
Based on Luke 1:34–37
"How will this be," Mary asked the angel, "since I am a virgin?"
The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God. Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be barren is in her sixth month. For nothing is impossible with God."
The birth of a Savior, the Son of God, the promised Messiah, Jesus the Christ, was certainly a miracle of astounding proportions. God can do that? He will do that? He did do that? And in such a way?
Well, of course, it seems likely that God would have his Son come to earth as a child in such unlikely circumstances because otherwise it would open great questions about his Son.
But all of the theological debates and positions eventually quiet and it becomes a silent stage upon which God continues to draw his Majesty, individually, in lives, everyday.
How could Mary have a child though she was a virgin? As amazing, how could Elizabeth her barren relative have a child in her old age?
Today, families will celebrate the miracle of new birth where there was no hope for a child. Perhaps it will be through their conception. Perhaps it will be through the medical innovations that now allow many to bear children who could not before have a child. Perhaps it will be through the miracle of adoption. In each case, God is expressing redemption. “I have chosen this one for this family. This life is on loan to them, but I knew before time began that they would be together.”
Adoptive parents get the great joy of “choosing” the child that will be their child, part of their family. That child similarly gets the great joy of being chosen. And, no matter what method is used to choose, the beauty of it is that God ultimately has made the choice. He is in each method, each process, and it is his choice that prevails. The new family is brought together because it was God’s design. They were just playing a role in the process.
What is impossible to God?
And so the choosing continues. God chooses each parent for each child, whether natural or adopted. This is just like he chooses each person for his family as his child. How is it that we could be born of earthly parents and yet be a child of God? How is it that we could have imperfect human mothers and fathers but be the child of a perfect Father, the son or daughter of the King of the universe?
With God all things are possible.
Because God is love.
