The Spirit Convicts and We Witness
Based on John 16:8–11
When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer; and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.
The Holy Spirit. God’s gift of himself, According to Constable, “Believers are witnesses, the Holy Spirit is the prosecuting attorney, and the lost are guilty sinners.” The Holy Spirit has brought charges of sin in the heart of non-believers. We are simply the witnesses of God’s redemptive path, his Son Jesus Christ.
“What shall we say to these things?” asked Paul of the church at Rome. “If God be for us, who can be against us.” What shall non-believers say to the conviction of the Holy Spirit? They have two possible answers – I believe or I do not believe. The difference in their future is decided by those words.
When God’s Holy Spirit puts the sense in your heart that there is something wrong in your life, that it’s not adding up, that all I have done is not enough, then the Holy Spirit is prosecuting. What is required next is a witness.
